Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems Explained….

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) are safety devices installed in vehicles to monitor the air pressure inside the tyres. These safety devices alert the driver through the on-board computer when a tyres pressure becomes too low or too high for the driving conditions. Here at ALLOYHUB, we offer tyre pressure monitoring systems to all our customers where the vehicle has the functionality. When browsing on our website you will see that with our alloy wheel packages we offer tyres, tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), centre caps and wheel nuts to provide you everything you require to safely install the alloy wheels to your vehicle.

There are two main types of TPMS: direct and indirect. We will outline both below:

  1. Direct TPMS involves each tyre being equipped with a sensor that measures the exact air pressure in real time. These sensors are either mounted inside the tyre are integrated within the valve stem. Direct TPMS provide a higher level of accuracy with precise readings for each tyre.
  1. Indirect TPMS involves a system where the ABS (anti-lock braking system) is used to detect when a tyre is under inflated. This method doesn’t directly measure the tyre pressure; however, using the rotational speed of the wheel is able to detect an under or overinflated tyre. These are much cheaper to implement with no sensors or batteries to replace, however are much less accurate, will not detect slow leaks and recalibration may be required when tyres are rotated or changed.
