How should I maintain my alloy wheels?

Here at ALLOYHUB, all our wheels are supplied with a powder coated finish. This powder coated finish is much more durable than traditional wet painted finishes, however, they still require care to maintain that sleek finish and provide longevity.

We will break the guidelines down into three main areas: cleaning, removal of brake dust, and protective coatings. We will outline these in depth below:

1. Regular Cleaning

  • Frequency: Clean your alloy wheels at least once a week, or more often if exposed to road salts or harsh environments.
  • Cleaning Products: Use a non-acidic, PH-balanced wheel cleaner to prevent corrosion and discoloration. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the protective coating on the alloy.
  • Tools: Use a soft brush or microfiber cloth to scrub the wheels, reaching into spokes and crevices. Avoid abrasive pads as they may scratch the surface.

2. Brake Dust Removal

  • Brake dust is corrosive and can harm alloy wheels if left unchecked.
  • Clean off brake dust promptly using a specialized brake dust cleaner or a gentle soap with water. Brake dust can be stubborn, so frequent cleaning will prevent buildup.

3. Protective Coatings

  • Apply a wheel wax or sealant after cleaning to protect the alloy surface from dirt, grime, and brake dust. This also makes future cleaning easier.
  • There are also ceramic coatings for wheels, which offer long-lasting protection against environmental damage.
